In the densely populated slums of Nairobi, such as Majengo and Kibera, period poverty and limited access to protective gear are pressing challenges. The Bidii Girls Programme recently intervened to address these issues by distributing sanitary pads and reusable masks. This initiative, supported by a generous donation from Vivo, is a significant step toward improving the health, safety, and dignity of young girls in these communities.
Addressing Period Poverty in Nairobi’s Slums
In informal settlements, many girls miss school each month due to a lack of access to sanitary products. Period poverty not only disrupts their education but also affects their confidence and mental well-being. To combat this, the Bidii Girls Programme organized a sanitary pad distribution drive, providing much-needed supplies to hundreds of girls in Majengo, Kibera, and other areas. By ensuring girls have the resources to manage their periods, we help them stay in school and focus on their education without fear of stigma or shame.
Protecting Health Amidst the Pandemic
As the COVID-19 pandemic continues to affect vulnerable communities, access to protective equipment like masks is critical. Many families in these slums cannot afford basic necessities, let alone protective gear. Recognizing this need, Vivo partnered with the Bidii Girls Programme to donate reusable masks. These masks are essential for safeguarding the health of young girls, allowing them to continue attending school and participating in community activities while staying protected.
Empowering Through Education and Support
Beyond just providing sanitary pads and masks, the Bidii Girls Programme also conducted educational sessions. These workshops focused on menstrual health, proper hygiene practices, and how to use the reusable masks correctly. By combining resource distribution with education, we aim to create lasting change, equipping girls with the knowledge and tools to take care of themselves confidently.
Creating a Brighter Future for Girls
Our work in Nairobi’s slums is more than just a one-time intervention—it’s part of a broader mission to uplift and empower girls in underserved communities. Through ongoing partnerships and community engagement, we strive to break the cycles of poverty and inequality that limit these girls’ potential. With continued support, we can reach even more girls and ensure that they have the dignity, safety, and opportunities they deserve.
