Period poverty remains a significant issue in Nairobi’s slums, where many girls lack access to basic menstrual products. The Bidii Girls Programme recognized the urgent need and intervened in Majengo, Kibera, and Mathare to distribute free sanitary pads. This initiative aims to ensure girls can manage their periods with dignity, stay in school, and avoid the educational setbacks often caused by period poverty.
Period poverty is a widespread yet often overlooked crisis in Nairobi’s informal settlements. In communities like Mathare, girls and young women face numerous challenges when managing their menstrual health. Many cannot afford sanitary pads, forcing them to resort to unsafe alternatives like rags or even skipping school during their periods. The Bidii Girls Program’s intervention in these slums aims to directly tackle this issue by providing free sanitary pads to girls in need.
Our recent distribution drive reached hundreds of girls across these communities. Through collaborative efforts with local leaders and volunteers, we identified the most vulnerable girls and ensured they received a consistent supply of sanitary pads. For these girls, having access to proper menstrual products is life-changing—it means fewer days missed at school, improved self-confidence, and a renewed sense of dignity.
The impact goes beyond just providing pads. During the distribution, our team engaged the girls in discussions about menstrual health and hygiene. We emphasized the importance of understanding their bodies, breaking the stigma associated with menstruation, and maintaining proper hygiene practices. The goal was not only to supply products but also to empower these girls with knowledge and support, fostering an environment where they feel seen, valued, and respected.
The fight against period poverty is ongoing, but the strides made in Mathare are a testament to what can be achieved through community-driven initiatives. The Bidii Girls Program remains committed to expanding this work, ensuring that every girl can access the resources she needs to stay in school and build a brighter future.
