Protecting Girls in Nairobi’s Slums with Reusable Masks: A Partnership with Vivo

As part of the ongoing fight against COVID-19, the Bidii Girls Programme partnered with Vivo to distribute reusable masks to girls in Nairobi’s slums. This initiative aims to protect their health while ensuring they can continue attending school and participating in daily activities safely.

The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the inequalities faced by vulnerable communities, particularly in Nairobi’s densely populated slums like Majengo, Kibera, and Mathare. These areas, characterized by overcrowded living conditions and limited access to health resources, are at high risk for virus transmission. Recognizing the need to protect the health of young girls in these communities, the Bidii Girls Programme partnered with Vivo to distribute reusable masks to ensure they remain safe while going about their daily routines.

The distribution of masks is more than just a health measure—it’s an act of care and solidarity. Many families in these slums cannot afford disposable masks, and the cost of constantly replacing them is unsustainable. By providing high-quality, reusable masks, we are giving girls a tool that will protect them over an extended period. The masks are washable, durable, and designed to fit comfortably, allowing the girls to wear them throughout the day without difficulty.

Beyond distribution, we conducted sessions to educate the girls on the importance of mask hygiene, including how to properly wear, wash, and store their masks to maintain effectiveness. We emphasized that these masks are crucial not just for their own safety but also for protecting their families and communities. By equipping them with both the physical resources and the knowledge to stay safe, we aim to reduce the spread of COVID-19 in these high-risk areas.

Our partnership with Vivo was instrumental in making this initiative a success. Their generous donation enabled us to reach hundreds of girls who otherwise would have had limited or no access to protective gear. The response from the community has been overwhelmingly positive, with parents and guardians expressing gratitude for the support during these challenging times.

The Bidii Girls Program remains committed to addressing both immediate and long-term needs in these communities. By combining efforts to fight period poverty with initiatives that safeguard health, we are taking a comprehensive approach to improving the well-being of girls in Nairobi’s slums.
